Getting through the critical time of drought
The Republic of Senegal, which lies on the west coast of Africa, is nearly five times the size of Switzerland and has a population of around 10 million. The country enjoys a fairly stable democracy.
Senegal has several different climate zones. Access to water is a particular problem in the north. The population cannot rely on a guaranteed supply of food throughout the year. This means that, during the annual period of food scarcity which they call ‘soudure’ (hungry season), many Senegalese are forced into debt. This is where Fastenopfer concentrates its programme work.
