Finding ways out of poverty

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and belongs to the group of least developed countries. Moreover, it is suffering advanced environmental degradation. The political situation in Haiti has been marked in the last decades by recurring crises, such as coups d’etat, foreign interventions or dictatorships, with eruptions of violent conflicts, violations of human rights and chronic instability. The widespread felling of the last remaining stocks of trees, and the resulting erosion of soils in the last few years has led to a further deterioration in the population’s economic and ecological situation. For this reason, Fastenopfer concentrates its work mainly on the disadvantaged rural population.
