Democratic Republic of Congo

Strengthening communities marked by war and dictatorship

The Democratic Republic of Congo, which gained independence in 1960, lies in the centre of Africa. The country is rich in natural resources which have, however, only been exploited to a limited extent. The largest section of the population is involved in agriculture.
More than 50% of the total land area is covered by tropical rain forest, but increasing deforestation and soil erosion are having a serious effect on the environment. Moreover, the majority of the population lack access to clean drinking water or medical treatment in the rural areas.
